Five Ways to Rock Your Career

Ever wonder what rock stars do after their fans move on to follow the latest hit maker? And what happened to our favorite lead singers from the eighties and nineties who were constantly on the radio and MTV, back when MTV actually played music videos and didn't feature shows about teen moms and Catfishing?

Read on for five ways to rock your own career.

1) Form creative and strategic partnerships with new talent. Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates) has done this to perfection. Just check out his show "Live from Daryl's House" to see him perform with Grace Potter, Plain White T's, Butch Walker and Mutlu. Anyone with experience at an ad agency knows that forming partnerships is a key to surviving the influx of 20-somethings every year.

2) Leverage your reputation and talent to create other career paths and revenue opportunities. The current career-change master is Gwen Stefani, lead singer of No Doubt, Voice coach, mother, wife and designer of successful fashion line L.A.M.B. Her current net worth, according to Forbes, is $80 million.) How to apply Gwen's direction to your world? If you're a banker, get licensed as a stockbroker to make the really big bucks. English teacher? Write that novel that you know has a shot at being a New York Times bestseller!

3) Promote yourself and change your job title from "talent" to manager, producer or director. Talk about sweet dreams. Former Eurythmics singer/songwriter Dave Stewart is now a sought-after music producer, working with Joss Stone and other major artists. (Dave has also produced TV shows, movie soundtracks and Broadway musicals.) Another notable rock star who gravitated to the movies: Oingo Boingo's Danny Elfman, Grammy winner and nominated for four Academy Awards.

4) Draft a business plan then ask your friends and followers to build an empire around your one big hit. Margaritaville created legions of Parrotheads around the world. And singer Jimmy Buffet built dozens of restaurants, bars, casinos and resorts to cater to the millions of fans who sing along to "Margaritaville" and wish for a sunny, carefree getaway in a warm, sunny location. (And how many of you on LinkedIn didn't know that these popular eateries and watering holes were inspired by a song?)

5) Keep on 'rockin what you do best and love more than any other job. In recent months as I've traveled back and forth to Las Vegas as a marketing consultant for Chapel of the Flowers and Tropicana LV Weddings, I've had the privilege of getting to know Paul Shortino and the cast of real rock stars who put on the best show on the Strip: Raiding the Rock Vault.

Paul (pictured above) was the former frontman for Quiet Riot and Rough Cutt and he shares the stage with Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake), Robin McAuley (Survivor), Andrew Freeman (Offspring), Jay Schellen (Hurricane; Asia), Hugh McDonald (Bon Jovi) and other notable rock singers and musicians. When you see this show (and you absolutely should next time you're in Vegas!) take note of their talent, dedication, focus and energy. While it is easy to get burned out in any industry, these artists have mastered their craft and have stayed committed to their chosen career path.
